Q:Guidedbytheconceptofaglobalcommunityofsharedfuture,Chinahasdonealottopromotecommonprosperityfortheworld.However,sometimestheWest,theyseemtointerpretChina’seffortsinverydifferentways,callingChinasometimesanaggressivethreattotheinternationalorder.So,howwouldyoucomment,orwhatdoyoumakeofsuchcommentsfromtheWest?

DavidFerguson:Well,Ithinkit’saveryaccuratedescriptionofwhatishappening.AndChinahasmadeimmenseeffortsthroughBRICS,throughtheBeltandRoadInitiative,throughmany,throughrespectfortheParisAccords,therearethesesustainabledevelopmentgoalsfor2030.Chinahasmadeahugeefforttotryandfurtherworldinterests.AndIthinkthatthewayitisportrayedinthewestmediaisbecomingincreasinglyhostile.

AndIwonderiftheydon’tgagonthestanchionoftheirownhypocrisy.Thisisoneside.TheothersideisChina,tryingtobuildaglobalcommunityofsharedfuture.Butthatiswhattheyareupagainst,andasIsaid,itdoesn’tleavemewithhugereasonsforoptimism.

DavidFerguson:Well,Ithinkthatisaveryinterestingquestion,becauseIwouldsuggestthattheconceptofaglobalcommunityofasharedfutureisalreadytheinternationalconsensusacrossthepeoplewhoactuallyrepresentthemajorityofthepopulation.Indevelopingcountries,inCentralAsia,inSouthAmerica,inGlobalSouth,peoplealreadyunderstandandlookforwardtoaglobalcommunityofsharedfuture.Theywatchitattentivelywhat’shappeninginChina.TheymarvelatChina’ssuccess.TheywanttounderstandthereasonsforChina’ssuccessandtheywanttoknowwhatcanbeappliedtotheirownsituation,becauseyoucanneversimplyimitateanothercountry’smodel,youcannotimitateanothercountry’sprocess.Butasfarastheconceptisconcerned,it’salreadyaconsensus.Asfarasthewillisconcerned,it’sthereamong,asIsay,thecountrieswhorepresentthemostofthepopulation.Wheretheissueliesisamongthedeveloped,largelywesterncountries.

AndIthinkthatChinahastoinvestamuchgreatereffortintryingtotalktopeople,intryingtotalktothemassaudiencesinwesterncountries,intryingtoengagewiththemonsomeemotionallevel,andintryingtowinheartsandminds.
