Thenearlysix-hourcongressionalgrillingofTikTokCEOShouZiChewleftonewonderingwhatthepointofthehearingwasotherthantoexposetheincompetenceofsomecongressionalmembers.
Despitethecongressionalgrilling,TikTokreceivedunwaveringsupportfromitsmyriadU.S.users,whodefendedTikTok"sinnocence,expressedtheirsupportandmockedthelawmakers"hysteriaandignoranceatthehearing.

Lastingfornearlysixhours,Thursday"shearingbytheHouseCommitteeonEnergyandCommercecenteredondataprivacyandchildprotection,aboutwhichChewpresentedthecommittee"sbipartisanmemberswithstepsTikTokhasbeentakingtoaddresstheassociatedrisksthatareofconcern.
Throughoutthehearing,thelawmakersneithercaredaboutnorbelievedintheexplanationbyChew.Instead,theywereblindlyfocusedonhammeringhomethemessagethatTikTokisathreattodataprivacyof150millionAmericanusersandnationalsecurity.
Lackingevidence,theonlyexcusebywhichthelawmakerssingledoutTikTokasthemust-be-bannedappisthatitsparentcompany,ByteDance,operatesinChina.IgnoringthatByteDanceisaprivatebusiness,thelawmakersremainfixedontheuntenablelogicthatcompaniesoperatinginChinamustheeddirectivesfromtheChinesegovernment.
